Just like vinegar, baking soda, and lemons, there are many household uses for salt. I love finding cheap and easy ways to take care of my farmhouse without a lot of fuss, not to mention toxic chemicals. I thought it would be fun to share with you some ways you can use simple table salt as a household helper.

Household Uses For Salt

1. Clean watermarks off your wood furniture with salt. Mix a teaspoon of salt with just enough water to make a paste. Apply the paste to the watermark and gently rub in a circular motion until the watermark is gone. Spray some furniture polish on it afterward to restore the shine.

2. You can cover a bee sting with a paste of water and salt. It reduces the swelling and the pain of it. Now, if you are allergic to bee stings, you will need medical help to keep from having more severe problems.

3. Do you have silk flowers? Did you know you could refresh their looks with salt? Place 2 or 3 cups of salt into a brown paper grocery bag. Add your silk flowers and shake for a few minutes. When you remove them, they are cleaned and refreshed.

4. Use salt and oil to clean your cast iron skillet. Place a couple of tablespoons of oil into your iron skillet and heat the pan until it is just warm. Add sea, Kosher or other coarse salts to the skillet and a paste will form because of the oil. Scrub the skillet. Rinse the skillet with hot water and dry thoroughly. Season your skillet to keep it from rusting.

5. Clean your vases with salt water to remove the residue from the flowers. Wash the vases afterward in soapy water. Let the vases air-dry or dry them with a clean towel.

6. Mix 1 tablespoon of salt and vinegar together to clean coffee or tea stains from your coffee cups. Let this mixture sit in your cups for 2 to 3 hours, and then wash with dishwashing liquid and rinse with warm water. Dry the cups with a towel.

7. Mix a teaspoon of salt with a teaspoon of baking soda. Wet your toothbrush and dip into this mixture to brush your teeth. This mixture will remove all the stains and even some tartar from the teeth. Rinse well and spit out the water. Your teeth and mouth will be fresh and clean.

8. Salt mixed with olive oil makes a wonderful exfoliating mixture for the skin. Apply it to your elbows, knees, heels or anywhere you have dry flaky skin. Rub the mixture gently into the skin to remove any of the dead skin. The olive oil helps to soften the skin, while the salt is an abrasive that helps to slough off the dead skin.

9. Use salt and lemon juice to remove onion and pepper odors from your hands. Pour some salt and lemon juice on your hands and rub them together, and then wash them with soap and rinse thoroughly. Your hands will have no trace of onions and peppers.

10. Add a tablespoon of salt to a bucket of hot water to mop your floors. You can even add a teaspoon of lemon juice if you want to disinfect your floors at the same time. Both salt and lemons are great for cleaning.
